a documentary film Project

We are…

…a troupe of filmmakers, scientists, and local enthusiasts inspired by the opening of the Coler Firefly Sanctuary, the first of its kind west of the Mississippi River. Can the simple magic of lightning bugs rally a community to protect wildlife even in the smallest of ways, and how profound can that be?

I’m Bucy McDonald, a documentary filmmaker, and this summer I returned to my childhood home of Northwest Arkansas to start a three-year project documenting the fireflies and the people who live there.

Do you remember the first time you saw a firefly?

Were you in the backyard on a June summer night, trying to catch them in jars? Or camping out in the Ozark Mountains? Were they flying low to the ground or high in the trees? How did you feel when you saw them for the first time? Whether your memories are from decades ago, or just last summer, we want to hear your story.

Our goal with this documentary film is to explore our willingness to protect fireflies for the simple magic they bring, and how memories play a part. Fill in the form on this page, or even better: record an audio or video message and email it to likestarsbutlower@gmail.com.
